Eagles CB Hanson received four-game suspension for diuretic use

The NFL announced Wednesday that the Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Joselio Hanson would be suspended for four games because he tested positive for a diuretic after last year’s NFC title game against the Arizona Cardinals.

However, Hanson’s attorney, David Cornwell said that the player did not use any steroid. He tested positive because he ingested a pill that turned out to be a diuretic. The player ingested the pill because he felt uncomfortable after eating some Chinese food. Cornwell also said the NFL’s policy on diuretics is misguided by the assumption that diuretics are used to mask the use of performance-enhancing drugs.

The Eagles will replace Hanson with cornerback Jack Ikegwuonu, who is in his second year of wearing Eagles jersey, by promoting him from the practice squad. And the spot in the practice squad will be filled by cornerback Stoney Woodson.

Chiefs RB Johnson received one-game suspension for detrimental conduct

For using a gay slur twice within a 24-hour period Sunday night and Monday, the Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson was ruled out for the team’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Nov. 8.

He was given a one-game suspension on Wednesday for conduct detrimental to the club. It was one day after he was kept away from the team activities on Tuesday as investigation was going on. All of these troubles were resulted from a gay slur. The two-time Pro Bowler used the slur when he questioned Coach Todd Haley’s football credentials on his Twitter account during an exchange with one of his Twitter followers. The next day he used it again when he asked reporters to get out of his locker and the Kansas City Star recorded his comment. It also caused a national gay rights advocacy organization to call on the league and the team asking for disciplinary action against the running back in Chiefs jersey.

But at least the suspension is much better than losing job. According to some provisions on his current five-year contract with the Chiefs, the team has the right to release him without paying promised money if he violated the provisions.

Panthers DB Wesley is not allowed to play Sunday against Bills

A one-game suspension will keep the Carolina Panthers special team player Dante Wesley from playing against the Buffalo Bills this Sunday. He was suspended for launching himself into defenseless returner Clifton Smith in Tampa Bay Buccaneers jersey.

The incident happened late in the second quarter on Sunday’s game. Wesley left his feet and hit Smith in the neck and head with his forearm and shoulder as Smith waited to field a punt without signaling for a fair catch. As Smith was confirmed to have sustained a concussion and both benches emptied onto the field, Wesley was immediately ejected from the game and the Panthers were penalized 15 yards

Wesley said he mistimed hitting Smith and was not intentional to hurt opponent player, but NFL executive vice president of football operations Ray Anderson called the act a flagrant violation of player safety rules. The suspension will cause Wesley to lose more than $36,000 in salary.
