The original news was that the Carolina Panthers cut veteran defensive tackle Damione Lewis, but it was changed to be about quarterback Jake Delhomme, who was released on the same day following Lewis. It had been expected that he would lose his starting job after his worst season as a pro last year, and being released was really a surprise.
One day ago, the Panthers said that they would like to keep quarterback Matt Moore in Panthers jersey for 2010 season but he may have to compete for the starting job. Since the team decided to release Delhomme, the quarterback Moore will have to compete with for the starting role must be someone new from the free agent market or draft pick. Bursting onto the scene in 2003 and leading the Panthers to the Super Bowl, Delhomme had been the team’s starting quarterback for years until last season after Moore replaced him to start in the final five games.
At the end of 2008 season, Panthers offered Delhomme a lucrative contract extension in hope that he would give better performance than committing six turnovers in a playoff loss to the Arizona Cardinals. However, Delhomme only offered another six-turnover performance in a season-opening loss to the Philadelphia Eagles and had a career-high 18 interceptions before being sidelined. Then Moore came on and had eight touchdown passes and only two interceptions as Carolina won four of its final five games. As a result of the different performance, the Panthers gave Moore the highest restricted free-agent tender of $3.043 million for one season on Wednesday while released Delhomme the next day.

Panthers DE Peppers still wants to play elsewhere
The Carolina Panthers said he does not want to have a long-term contract with the team, and the reason he gave was that the Panthers have ignored the five-time Pro Bowl defensive end this offseason, changing Peppers’ stance on whether to stay in Carolina.
“Last year, at the time, that was the option that I wanted most,” Peppers said. “Now it’s not.”
His agent Carl Carey said last week he believes the Panthers aren’t interested in retaining Peppers although he has been Panthers’ career sacks leader. Carey believes so because team officials haven’t announced their plans for the impending free agent. But it was Peppers who firstly rejected Panthers’ offer of a contract that could make Peppers the highest-paid defensive player in NFL jerseys after Peppers had a career-low 2 1/2 sacks in 2007. Peppers also announced he wanted to play elsewhere following 2008 season.

Panthers both RBs Williams and Stewart will play against Dolphins
Although they still have to take care of nagging injuries, the Carolina Panthers running backs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart were still listed as active for Thursday night’s game against the Miami Dolphins.
Williams had a sore left knee and missed Wednesday’s practice, and Stewart missed practice on Tuesday because of a sore left Achilles’ tendon. Both were listed as questionable after Wednesday’s practice but still went on field in their Panthers jerseys to play against the Dolphins on Thursday.
Reserve safety Tyrone Culver was also active despite being questionable with an ankle injury. Left guard Nate Garner started in the lineup as replacement to Justin Smiley, who had a shoulder injury.

Panthers DB Wesley is not allowed to play Sunday against Bills
A one-game suspension will keep the Carolina Panthers special team player Dante Wesley from playing against the Buffalo Bills this Sunday. He was suspended for launching himself into defenseless returner Clifton Smith in Tampa Bay Buccaneers jersey.
The incident happened late in the second quarter on Sunday’s game. Wesley left his feet and hit Smith in the neck and head with his forearm and shoulder as Smith waited to field a punt without signaling for a fair catch. As Smith was confirmed to have sustained a concussion and both benches emptied onto the field, Wesley was immediately ejected from the game and the Panthers were penalized 15 yards
Wesley said he mistimed hitting Smith and was not intentional to hurt opponent player, but NFL executive vice president of football operations Ray Anderson called the act a flagrant violation of player safety rules. The suspension will cause Wesley to lose more than $36,000 in salary.
